Soluciones basadas en la naturaleza en Coyuca de Benítez: aportes, desafíos y oportunidades.

Abstract

The objective of this project is to analyze the challenges and opportunities of Nature-based Solutions (NBS), in the face of climate change, disaster risk and wáter management in the Coyuca Urban-Lagoon System (SULC). The municipality has a long history of disaster risk associated with hydrometeorological phenomena. The implementation of the NBS is an alternative that allows to face this problem and also contribute to the restoration of ecosystems and to an improvement in social challenges. The compilation of the information in the degree project was carried out under a qualitative method, through semi-structured interviews with actors who have investigated, worked and / or implemented NBS in different towns of Coyuca de Benítez. Three NBS have been identified to mitigate the effects linked to hydrometeorological phenomena: mangrove protection, reforestation with native plants in the basin, and the Rainwater Capture System. Likewise, it has been recognized that the actors have been able to change their perspective of the use of the ecosystem obtaining a social and economic benefit by applying the NBS in their daily lives. However, despite the multiple benefits they provide to communities, some actors do not consider that NBS indirectly contribute to disaster risk reduction, climate change mitigation, and water management.
